The Wedding Cake
by Frederick Dasinger
Frederick Dasinger comments, “The wedding cake is a piece that also functions as a vessel. The very top of the cake is removable and acts as a lid. The inside of the cake is hollow. I created this piece because I wanted to create something optimistic but still relevant when it comes to my perspective on gay marriage. It’s my dream to get married someday, and to me marriage represents love and commitment stronger than just a relationship, that has nothing to do with sexuality and only love. Deciding who to love and who to marry is the ultimate freedom from my perspective. But, my right to legal partnership is in danger. As a gay & transgender man from the United States, every day my rights are closer to being rolled back. This cake functions as a container to hold wishes. When you remove the top layer of the cake (the lid) you can slip your rolled up wish into the small hole and then it will be stuck inside the cake forever. I collected over 100 wishes from LGBTQ+ Cal Poly Humbodlt students wishing for equal access to marriage and the legal right to be in a relationship with anyone they want. Each wish will never be seen/read unless the clay cracks/shatters someday, so their wishes are safe with me! I wanted to create this piece as an outlet for my anxieties when it comes to my rights as a gay person in America.”
